In 2016 the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs required all county addiction authorities to develop a warm hand-off plan for individuals treated for opioid overdose in a hospital or emergency department. Spotlight: Pennsylvania’s Warm Hand-Off

A brief overview of Pennsylvania’s program to implement warm hand-off’s to treatment for individuals seen in hospitals and emergency departments for addiction related issues. In 2016 the state Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs required all county addiction authorities to develop a warm hand-off plan for individuals treated for opioid overdose in a hospital or emergency department. The program has significantly increased the percentage of patients who enter treatment after receiving a screening and assessment and a direct referral to treatment through this program. Spotlight: Kenton County Detention Center Substance Abuse Program (SAP)

A brief overview of the Kenton County, Kentucky Detention Center’s Substance Abuse Program (SAP) which provides substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and connections to after care for residents of the facility. A 2016 evaluation of SAP programs statewide found participants were highly satisfied with the program and it was associated with reduced recidivism, positive outcomes for participants such as stable housing and employment, and reduced costs for the state. This overview explains how the Kenton County Detention Center structures its SAP program. Spotlight: Aware Recovery Care

A brief overview of Aware Recovery Care (ARC) substance use disorder (SUD) treatment model that provides in-home treatment from a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Operational in Connecticut and New Hampshire, the ARC model provides individualized, flexible services that address common barriers to accessing treatment such as difficulties with scheduling, or transportation, and provides SUD treatment in the person’s home environment where they will maintain their recovery. A study found that patients in ARC treatment models had recovery rates six times higher than the national average. Spotlight: Ocean County, New Jersey Prosecutor’s Blue Heroin Addiction Recovery and Treatment (HART)

An overview of the Ocean County, New Jersey Prosecutor’s Office efforts to work with law enforcement to provide access to treatment and recovery for community members with substance use disorders (SUD). The Blue Heroin Addiction Recovery & Treatment (HART) program began with enhanced naloxone distribution to first responders in 2013, expanded to providing recovery support coaches to patients seen in the emergency department for an opioid overdose, and led to creating treatment intake stations at 6 Ocean County police stations.
